The surgical services at Animal Hospital West are designed to be as safe and effective as possible. Starting with a pre-operation exam, owner consultation, and estimate, we make sure to provide all details so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your pet’s surgery.

Procedures

At our facility, we can perform most routine and advanced surgeries. Spaying, neutering, and other soft tissue surgeries are common procedures for dogs and cats, including operations to address illness and trauma in sick and injured pets. These include tumor and mass removals, cystotomy operations to remove bladder stones, and c-sections when necessary. Other more advanced procedures include orthopedics to assist the healing process when a limb or joint is fractured or otherwise damaged. We are also able to perform eye surgeries on canine patients.

What to Expect

During the pre-surgery exam, our veterinarians will determine if any antibiotics or other pre-medication is necessary based on your pet’s health and the nature of the procedure being performed. In all cases, it is necessary for your pet to fast prior to coming to the clinic the morning of surgery. In most of our surgery cases, we will recommend blood work to check for proper function of the kidneys, liver, and heart and to determine if anesthesia and necessary medications will be safe for your pet.

While under anesthesia, your pet will be constantly monitored by our certified veterinarians. Our advanced monitoring equipment keeps constant tabs on oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature during every procedure to ensure that your pet remains safe and sound during the operation.

Following advanced surgeries, our technicians will constantly monitor vitals and maintain an IV drip until your pet’s temperature has normalized and the veterinarian feels comfortable taking him or her off anesthesia. In the post-op stage, we’ll prescribe pain management medications and determine what a reasonable healing time will be so you can know what to expect when you take your pet home.
